Composites are not as scary as you think! I love to do them for clients who desire photos that are a little more fabulous. Silk tosses are one of the photo styles for maternity photoshoots where the finished image is out-of-this-world when done right.
There are a few key tricks to creating a beautiful composite image:
1. You have to have a clear vision in your mind before you start photographing.
It is key to clearly see the vision before you place your mom-to-be in front of the camera. Standing up, especially in the same position very still for pregnant women is a lot. They are bearing the extra weight of a baby, so you want to be mindful to move quickly and efficiently.
2. Keep your lighting and framing of the subject exactly the same.
Because you will be doing a large amount of layering, you don't want to add unnecessary work to your process. By keeping the same lighting, best done in a studio setting, and positioning your subject in a beautiful but easy-to-hold position, you give yourself a clean canvas to work with.
3. Steadily refine your style.
It takes time and practice to perfect the art of photography, and it takes just as much time if not more to perfect the art of photo retouching, color grading, and the like. So, practice makes perfect!
