Lately I’ve been reminding myself of something simple:

Don’t forget to have fun.

Not everything has to be productive.

Not every moment needs to lead to a goal, a milestone, or a checkmark on a to-do list.

Sometimes it’s enough to simply enjoy your life.

As women, I think we’re especially prone to rushing from one thing to the next. There is always another responsibility waiting for us. Another appointment. Another project. Another person who needs our attention.

We become experts at managing life.

But somewhere along the way, many of us forget how to simply experience it.

As a Houston family photographer and Houston motherhood photographer, I spend a lot of time documenting milestones. New babies. Growing families. Celebrations. Life transitions.

Those moments are important.

But what I’ve learned over the years is that the moments people treasure most are often the ordinary ones.

The moments that don’t seem significant at the time.

A child curled up beside you on the couch.

A family dinner filled with laughter.

A conversation that lasts long after bedtime.

A quiet morning before the world wakes up.

Those are the moments that become the foundation of a meaningful life.

Lately I’ve found myself appreciating the little things more than ever.

Watching hummingbirds visit the flowers I planted for them.

Seeing bumblebees happily bounce from bloom to bloom in my garden.

Snuggling my dog whenever he’ll let me.

Getting completely lost in a good book.

Laughing with my daughters until none of us can remember what was funny in the first place.

These moments don’t show up on a résumé.

They don’t earn promotions.

They don’t help us cross something off a list.

But they matter.

Maybe more than we realize.

As a Houston photographer, I often hear clients say things like:

“I wish I had slowed down more.”

“I wish I had taken more pictures.”

“I wish I remembered more of that stage.”

Rarely does anyone tell me they wish they had worked a few more hours.

The older I get, the more I realize that joy doesn’t need to be earned.

You don’t have to finish every task before you allow yourself to enjoy your life.

You don’t have to reach a goal before you deserve rest.

You don’t have to become a better version of yourself before you allow yourself to be happy.

Life is happening right now.

Not when the kids are older.

Not when work slows down.

Not when you lose the weight.

Not when everything is perfect.

Right now.

This summer, I’m trying to make more room for joy.

More evenings outside.

More books.

More laughter.

More conversations.

More moments that won’t make it onto a calendar but will stay with me long after the summer ends.

And maybe that’s something worth remembering.

The big milestones matter.

But don’t miss your life while you’re waiting for them.

Because one day, you’ll realize that the little moments were the big moments all along.

XO, Kristen
